Rice bran oil

refined rice bran oil / crude rice bran oil /  bulk rice bran oil / virgin rice bran oil

Rice bran oil (also known as rice bran extract) is the oil extracted from the germ and inner husk of rice. It is notable for its very high smoke point of 490 °F (254 °C) and its mild flavor, making it suitable for high-temperature cooking methods such asstir frying and deep frying. It is popular as a cooking oil in several Asian countries, including Japan andChina.

Consumed at room temperature or cooler, rice bran oil is rich in vitamin E, gamma-oryzanol (an antioxidant that is used for many alternative herbal therapies, and may help prevent heart attacks, and phytosterols (compounds believed to help lower cholesterol absorption, which may provide associated health benefits.

Rice Bran wax, obtained from Rice Bran Oil is used as a substitute of Carnauba wax, used in shoe creams and shoe polishes.

Rice bran oil contains a range of fats, with 47% of its fats monounsaturated, 33% polyunsaturated, and 20% saturated

Health benefits of rice bran oil

  • It contains 47% monounsaturated fatty acids as close to peanut oil and hence is a heart healthy oil. It also contains 33% polyunsaturated fats and 20% saturated fats.
  • It helps to lower LDL or bad cholesterol and does not lower the good cholesterol as sunflower oils do and is known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  • It is rich in Vitamin E, hence provides protection from cancer causing radicals.
  • The oryzanol and tocopherols present provide antioxidants.
  • It can also strengthen the immunity.

Characteristics of  the Oil

  • It is said to have high smoking point and can be used for deep frying although I do not recommend. It does not give any off flavour while frying or even stir frying
  • It has a flavour ideal for Indian cooking. So you can include this oil in your day to day cooking.
  • It is viscous in nature and hence will be absorbed lesser by the foods and the food cooked in it will not be dripping in oil or soggy.
  • It can be used for baking as it gives good texture.
  • Great for salad dressing too.
  • It has good shelf life and not expensive as olive oil.

This oil is also finding its way into our cosmetics too. Hence Switch over to this oil for its healthy benefits.
